Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which neurons in the brain signal abnormally. Neurons normally generate electrical impulses that act on other neurons to cause a person's thoughts, feelings, and actions. In epilepsy, the normal pattern of neuron activity is disturbed, causing muscle spasms and more likely than not a loss of consciousness. In some people, this happens only occasionally; for others however, it may happen up to hundreds of times a day, and these are the kids who we are trying to help at S3 Charity for Epilepsy.
